A slow start in the first quarter ended the five-game winning streak for the Highlands Bluebirds girls basketball team (7-4 overall) Friday.
Highlands fell behind the Dixie Heights Colonels (8-2), 10-1 after the first quarter. The Bluebirds trailed 26-11 at halftime and 30-19 entering the fourth quarter before losing 36-33. Highlands is 4-3 against 9th Region competition.
Highlands senior forward Kelsey Listerman scored a team-high 11 points. No one else scored in double figures for the Bluebirds.
The Bluebirds made just 8-of-26 shots for 31 percent from the field including 2-of-10 from three-point range for 20 percent and 11-of-13 free throws for 85 percent. Highlands also had five assists, six steals, 11 turnovers and 24 rebounds. Senior forward Rory O’Hara had a team-high eight rebounds.
Junior power forward Madelyn Lawson led Dixie Heights with 16 points and senior point guard Sydney Lockard had 13.
Highlands plays host to Conner (5-4) on Monday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
