Ever wonder what you can on Earth Day weekend to make a difference in the community? Here are two things to help you get in touch with nature.
Friday, April 20 and Saturday, April 21:
First, volunteer to get your hands dirty in Highland Park restoring trails, building bridges, getting some fresh air, and just having fun in the woods in the annual Due Energy sponsored event.
Jeff Mohr of Duke Energy will again lead the event. This will be his fourth year leading the event. Mohr says, “Duke Energy’s grant donations and its employees who volunteer for these events have made a heavy impact on our progress but we couldn’t do any of this without the help of the Fort Thomas community and its public servants. Fort Thomas takes pride in its town and I see that year in and year out during these events.”

And just what will the specific tasks be this year? Mohr says, “This year’s events will be concentrating on the trails and invasive species removal around the park. We have blazed in a full perimeter trail in the last year and it needs some fine tuning that includes grading, bridge building, and graveling. We have removed any hazardous dead trees (99% of them being ash) along the trail to ensure a safe hike in the woods. Our volunteer needs are endless. We have plenty of work to do so long as mother nature is kind to us over the next few weeks.”

Sunday, April 22:
Visit the Mess Hall and Tower Park on Sunday, 12:00 – 5:00 for the largest Earth Day celebration in Northern Kentucky. The event will include lots of activities for kids and families, exhibitors, vendors, hikes, and demonstrations. The event is sponsored by the Fort Thomas Forest Conservancy and the City of Fort Thomas.
Debbie Buckley, the city’s Economic Development Director and one of the organizers, says, “This year’s Earth Day event is going to bring so many groups together who share a love of our natural resources. One would never guess how many people in Fort Thomas and our neighboring community focus their talents and passion on protecting and enriching the earth around us. From bicycles to recycling, from hiking to composting, these vendors and participants love this earth. Everyone should see this because you live here too.”
