In a move that will allow the city to hire a full-time fire chief, Ludlow City Council members voted to adopt an amended comprehensive pay plan Thursday evening.
The plan includes a pay range increase for the city’s police captain, police sergeant, police lieutenant, public works director and public works laborer.
The council vote resulted in a tie, but the mayor broke the tie in favor of the ordinance.
Council members unanimously agreed on hiring a full-time fire chief, but did not all agree with raising the pay ranges at this point in the year. They suggested the council revisit the topic when they review the city budget.
“Increasing the ranges does not have any immediate impact on the city budget,” said Mayor Chris Wright. “We were not voting on raises for those positions. We were simply voting for the potential range of those positions.”
Michael Steward, who served as the part-time chief in Ludlow and the full-time chief in Walton simultaneously, stepped down from his role in Ludlow on Jan. 25.
